20 Apr C Is for Creepy
Jim Henson would not be okay with what’s been going on lately.
On Sunday April 12th a 16-year-old female tourist exploring Times Square in New York with a tour group was groped by a man dressed as the sugar-addicted Cookie Monster character from Sesame Street.
The young teen was walking in front of the Toys’R’Us around 5:30 p.m. with her tour group when 48-year-old Ranulfo Perez, who was dressed as the Cookie Monster, pulled the teen for a hug and forcibly touching the female’s breast.
Perez was immediately arrested on the scene by NYPD and was charged with forcible touching in a manner injurious to a child less than 17 and second degree harassment.
However, this incident is not the first for the costumed characters. Over 18 costumed characters were arrested in 2014.
A mentally ill man dressed as Elmo has been arrested multiple times for disorderly conduct. Another man dressed as Spiderman was arrested last year for striking a police officer and another man dressed as Woody from Toy Story was arrested for grabbing a woman’s buttocks.
Times Square is known for it’s lively culture and street artist, but there are some City Council members who are trying to push for legislation to regulate these costumed characters. The bill is still under debate.
