18 Feb Fiat Chrysler Gear Shifter Accidents
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating confusing gear shifters that have caused over 300 runaway car incidents. Of the 300 incidents, 100 turned into runaway accidents, leaving many people injured by the runaway cars.
The focus of the investigation is the ZF Group Monostable electronic gearshift. The shifter springs back to neutral or reverse when not locked in park. This prevents the engine from turning off.
The jumpy shifters has left over 300 surprised drivers chasing after cars they believe to be off and in park. The rogue vehicles have caused 3 pelvis fractures as well as face lacerations and minor injuries to 27 other people.
Preliminary tests haven’t found any defects with the machinery, just very poor design. Investigators found the shifters were unintuitive and lacked tactile and visual feedback. The probe has been upgraded to an engineering analysis, which is one step closer to a recall.
