Retired Saints Defensive End, Will Smith, Shot to Death

Retired Saints defensive end, Will Smith, was shot to death after a minor car accident in New Orleans.

Cardell Hayes rear-ended the Mercedes G63 SUV Will Smith and his wife were in, pushing them into another car.

According to a witness, Hayes approached Smith initiating a heated argument before pulling the gun on Smith.

Smith was killed by gunshot wounds to his back and right torso. He was pronounced dead at the scene. It is unclear whether Smith was shot inside or outside of his car.

His wife, Raquel Smith, was hospitalized for two non life-threatening gunshot wounds to the leg.

Hayes was arrested on a charge of second-degree murder. He is currently being held for $1 million bail.

The New Orleans Police Department is investigating whether the shooting was a road-rage incident.

Smith played for the New Orleans Saints for more than 10 seasons. He was apart of the Saints team that defeated the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV.

Smith was not only a talented athlete, he was an active member of his community. He was heavily involved in Where There’s A Will, There’s A Way, Kingsley House, and numerous other charities that provide support to at risk children and families.

He will be greatly missed.
